Anyone who followed the Eurobike 2023 in Frankfurt closely will not have missed the first reports on the new "DangerLumen". With this electrified lightweight, Dangerholm has once again shown that he can squeeze even more power out of an already very potent series model. Dangerholm's detailed solutions are truly remarkable - he has never done so much individual work on any of his previous bikes as he did on the construction of this Lumen. Be curious!

After Dangerholm had already dabbled enough in the world of MTBs and road bikes, it was finally time for an electronic model: With the SCOTT Lumen eRIDE 900 SL (15.5kg without pedals), the appropriate basis was found and it was stripped of paint, analysed and tinkered with. Due to the potent chassis, Dangerholm did not miss the opportunity to realise two superstructures. So you are not only presented with a lightweight XC version, but you can also marvel at a grittier version for the trails. The scales swing between 12.85kg and 14.04kg. If you have any further optimisation thoughts here and there, please also remember: the lumens are not only built for the showcase, but must "endure" the builder and his individual riding style in the respective terrain. It should be clear to everyone that both the previous bikes and this one will lose any warranty claim due to the modifications ;-) Especially with the Lumen, however, it should be explicitly mentioned once again, as the electronics have also been modified.

XC Version

Frame
The SCOTT Lumen eRIDE is essentially the e-bike version of the SCOTT Spark. The suspension travel has been slightly increased from 120mm to 130mm, and a TQ drive unit and the corresponding battery system have also been integrated. The geometry data is identical to the Spark - the Lumen only has a 17% larger frame volume and therefore presents itself as a very inconspicuous e-bike. The frame weighs approx. 2225g without shock, axle and drive unit. After the usual loving treatment with Mora knives, Dangerholm saves the first 150g and ends up at 2072g.

Suspension
If weight is an issue, then even a hidden 40g is no small feat for Dangerholm. He swaps the stock FOX shock for a RockShox NUDE 5 RLC3 shock from a Spark RC. While the FOX is the sensible choice for lumens on the trail, in this particular project Dangerholm opts for the lighter RockShox, which has a slightly smaller air chamber. With the INTEND Samurai TR, the currently lightest 130mm fork comes to the Lumen at 1537g. In addition to the low weight, the specific characteristics of this upside-down fork were also decisive for Dangerholm. Low unsprung mass, excellent lubrication and a little more wheel flex suited his personal preferences. If you prefer an extremely stiff fork or have a heavier tare weight, you will probably prefer a different fork! The TR version of the Samurai has neither a lockout nor a remote control.

Motor
Now it's getting exciting, because with the TQ HPR50 drive unit we come to a part that didn't exist at all in the previous bike projects ;-) Dangerholm had the opportunity to work with the TQ team on the drive tuning. CERAMICSPEED and METI also assisted him with the detailed solutions and the result of this exciting cooperation is quite impressive. The HPR50 is characterised by a very smooth and pleasant power delivery and is extremely quiet. The Lumen is equipped with a 360Wh battery, which can be optionally expanded with 160Wh. At the beginning, the regular main cable was exchanged for a lighter one. Then, as part of a research project by TQ, a lighter carbon housing was developed for the internal battery to save a further whopping 206g. The drive unit received prototype tuning: all bearings were replaced with these from CERAMICSPEED, which increased efficiency and reduced weight by a further 40g. Finally, METI manufactured special hollow titanium mounting bolts. These were able to halve the weight from 63g to 32g compared to the stock steel bolts. The tuned TQ HPR50 system weighs in at 3783g - the remote control adds another 27g.

Drive Train
In addition to optimising the drivetrain, Dangerholm also went all out with the rear derailleur this time and literally conjured up his own. For the Lumen project, Dangerholm opted for an 11-speed drivetrain, as this makes more sense in terms of weight and the missing gear jumps or gears can simply be made up for by the motor. A mechanical gearstick would be the optimum in terms of lightweight construction, but it would be out of place on this bike, which is why Dangerholm quickly built one suitable for him from two gearsticks. The basis is a RED AXS XPLR rear derailleur, from which Dangerholm used the parallelogram and the "B-joint", the part bolted to the derailleur hanger, the length of which determines the size of the cassette with which the rear derailleur can be used. Now it "only" had to become an 11-speed rear derailleur. For this, Dangerholm used a "P-joint" from the updated RED eTap 11-speed derailleur - the black composite part that houses the electronics and clutch system. The RED was completely redesigned a few years ago and has the same dimensions and Orbital Clutch system as the 12-speed XPLR, but its inner workings make it an 11-speed shifter. Et voila! In the course of the product update of the eTap rear derailleurs, they became compatible with the current shift levers and also the AXS BlipBox. This allowed Dangerholm to use the Zirbel Twister, which are also BlipBox compatible. The BlipBox is hidden in the steerer tube and covered with foam so that nothing rattles. The cassette is a pre-series model from SixWheels. This is also very light and shifts pleasantly. The crank, an E*THIRTEEN e*spec Race Carbon, has been stripped of paint and impresses with its chic 3k carbon finish. It weighs just 328g. Another prototype chainring is used - this time from GARBARUK. It is TQ-compatible and weighs only half as much as the standard Spider setup. The Eggbeater 11 Ti SL from CRANKBROTHERS complete the crank.

Wheelset
The PiRope wheels weigh 945g and are completed with DUKE rims and NONPLUS hubs. The mounted KENDA Rush Pro in 2.4" width offers low rolling resistance as an all-round XC tyre and weighs just 620g. Dangerholm uses the Eco Sealant by SYNCROS as a tubular sealing system - but if it really has to be LIGHT, the REVOLOOP Ultra MTB tubes are his first choice.

Brakes
Braking is done with the Piccola Carbon by TRICKSTUFF. Thanks to their low weight, they look great on the Lumen and also deliver the necessary power. Carbon-Ti supplies the X-Rotor SteelCarbon brake discs, which are also lightweight and 180mm in size.

Cockpit
For the headset, Dangerholm again relies on the expertise of CERAMICSPEED and uses the SLT headset bearings, which promise high durability and smooth running at low weight. The Lumen is steered with a DARIMO Epsilon stem/handlebar combination in 740mm width and 70mm length with a weight of 174g. DARIMO offers a huge number of combinations for this stem/handlebar combination, so you can order this beautiful piece according to your own preferences: Incredibly light? No problem! Reinforced for heavy riders or hard racing? Sure, because depending on your needs, an individual carbon layup is made, because DARIMO leaves nothing to be desired! A small and fine highlight is the Ahead cap, which is not only a lightweight model from RadoxX, but also the first part of the Dangerholm Signature series. This piece of jewellery weighs in at an incredible 4g! EXTRALITE HyperGrips, including the end pieces, weigh 11.8g and provide the necessary grip.

Seat
You sit on a 130mm wide MCFK saddle, which, contrary to expectations, is incredibly comfortable and offers a lot of flex. The carbon surface allows bib shorts or shorts to glide over the saddle - chafing on long rides is a thing of the past. The saddle is held by a Podio seatpost from YEP Components with an adjustment range of 80mm. The low weight of 340g can be reduced if necessary by simply shortening the post. The dropper is extremely smooth and easy to use, the cable can be easily disconnected if necessary - for example when travelling. The SUB4 seat clamp also comes from DARIMO and, despite its minimalism and a weight of just 4g, allows a torque of up to 5Nm.

Trail Version

As mentioned at the beginning, there is also a trail version in addition to the XC version, which expands the range of use. Here, too, the focus was on low weight - depending on the tyre setup, this bike weighs 13.94kg or 14.04kg. The SYNCROS Silverton SL wheels come in at 1256g and are stable and durable. Their unique carbon construction gives them remarkable propulsion. For the tyres Dangerholm uses two setups: SCHWALBE's Wicked Will and KENDA's Karma 2 in 2.4" width each. The tyres are used depending on the area of use and both are tubeless.

Cockpit
The 760mm wide MCFK Riser handlebar with a chic weave finish is used here. The stem is a HyperStem by EXTRALITE with a length of 60mm - both parts together weigh 186.7g.

Drive Train
Instead of the Eggbeater pedals from CRANKBROTHERS, either XPEDO's Baldwin pedals or Mallet E 11 Ti from CRANKBROTHERS are used here. Both offer a more secure stance and grip in difficult terrain compared to the Eggbeaters. An XX1 10-42 cassette swaps places with the SixWheels cassette. Instead of the Podio, the seatpost is a FOX Transfer SL with 150mm on the Lumen, which is a bit more special with its two fixed positions, but still works very well. Maybe Dangerholm will exchange it for a regular TRANSFER with 175mm, which is a bit heavier but offers more drop and can be lowered slightly if necessary.

Summary
This project had its work cut out for it, but also exceeded Dangerholm's expectations of the result. The DangerLumen is an unbelievably exciting bike that dispels the prejudice that e-bikes are "unrideable" with an empty battery and that you can recognise them as e-bikes at first glance. This is a custom-made bike, but in the future, e-bike designs will probably strive in exactly this direction, both visually and in terms of weight!
