Bike Hubs – the pivotal point
Imagine this: You're giving it your all on the trail or the road, but something just doesn’t feel right. It’s not the tire, it’s not the chain – it’s the hub. This small, unassuming component determines how smoothly your bike rolls, how directly your power is transferred, and whether you feel stable in corners or not. The hub is the heart of your wheel – and thus your silent partner for more speed, control, and riding enjoyment.

The Right Hub For Your Dream-Wheelset
At R2BIKE, you’ll find hubs for every bike and every use: whether MTB, road bike, gravel, or cyclocross, with disc or rim brake mounts, for all axle standards and spoke hole counts. And if you’re ever unsure: Our support will help you find the perfect hub for your project.
Why a Good Hub Revolutionizes Your Riding Experience
From the outside, you can hardly see its importance – but a high-quality hub makes all the difference:
- Acceleration: Lightweight, precisely bearing-mounted hubs ensure immediate propulsion.
- Stability: Whether on steep downhills or fast corners – a stiff hub gives you confidence.
- Durability: Robust bearings and seals keep out dirt and moisture – for years of fun.
Fun Fact: Many mechanics call the hub the "heart of the wheel" – and for good reason. It connects the frame, spokes, and rim and significantly influences rolling resistance, braking behavior, and cornering stability.
How a Hub Is Built – And What You Need to Know
1. The Hub Shell: The Center of Power
Every hub consists of a central hub shell that houses the bearings and axle. The axle is fixed in the frame or fork and carries the entire wheel. On rear hubs, there’s also the freehub – it ensures you can coast without constantly pedaling.
2. Spoke Holes & Bearings: Stability vs. Weight
- Spoke Holes: The more holes, the more stable (but also heavier) the wheel becomes. Typical counts are 24, 28, or 32 holes.
- Bearings: Industrial bearings are low-maintenance, while cup-and-cone bearings allow for precise adjustment – both have their advantages.
3. Brake Systems: Disc or Rim Brake?
- Disc Brake Mount: Modern hubs are designed for 6-bolt or Centerlock discs. Make sure they’re compatible with your brakes!
- Rim Brakes: Classic hubs without disc mounts – for (older) road bikes or retro bikes.
4. Axle Standards: Thru Axle or Quick Release?
The axle connects the hub and frame. Here are the most important standards:
- MTB: 15x100 (front), 12x142/148 (Boost, rear)
- Road/Gravel: 12x100 (front), 12x142 (rear)
- Fat Bike: Up to 15x190 mm for extreme widths
Tip: Thru axles (e.g., 12 mm) are stiffer and more precise than quick releases – perfect for demanding trails or race tracks.
J-Bend or Straightpull? Comparing Spoke Attachments
J-Bend is more affordable and easier to replace. However, it is slightly heavier. Straightpull hubs are lighter, more aerodynamic, and stiffer. However, they are a bit more expensive and require special spokes.
Our Advice: Straightpull hubs are worth it if you want to save every gram or need maximum stiffness. If you prefer a worry-free package and want the blades to always be perfectly aligned, J-Bend is the proven choice.
Which Hub Is Right for You? The R2BIKE Buying Guide
1. Intended Use:
- MTB: Robust hubs with wide mounting width (e.g., 148 mm Boost) and disc mounts.
- Road/Gravel: Lightweight hubs with aerodynamic design, often with Centerlock.
2. Check Compatibility:
- Axle standard (e.g., 12x142 mm)
- Brake system (disc/rim brake)
- Freehub (e.g., Microspline or XDR)
3. Material & Bearings:
- Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant – standard for most hubs.
- Stainless Steel: Extremely durable, but heavier.
- Bearings: Industrial bearings for durability, cup-and-cone bearings for fine-tuning.
4. Extras:
- Hub Dynamo: Ideal for tours – power for lights on the go.
