Why the Choice of Wheels Determines Your Riding Experience

Wheels are among the most important components of your bike and offer enormous tuning potential. No other component influences the riding behavior as directly as a high-quality wheel set. While the frame and fork define the basic characteristics of your bike, it is the wheels that determine acceleration, smooth running, cornering stability, and traction. Every gram saved on rotating masses is particularly noticeable - lighter wheels accelerate noticeably more agile and make handling easier on challenging terrain.

What Really Matters When Buying Wheels

When selecting a new wheel set, you should first define your area of use. Are you mainly on cross-country trails, do you value marathon tours, or do you prefer aggressive enduro and downhill passages? The requirements differ considerably: While every gram counts in XC racing and stiff, light constructions are in demand, you need robust, wider wheels with high impact resistance in the gravity area.

The rim width plays a central role here. Wider rims - today's standard with inner widths from 25 to over 35 mm - allow lower tire pressures with better lateral stability at the same time. The result: more traction, higher comfort, and more precise handling in curves. The tire sits wider on the rim, the contact area increases, and the rolling behavior becomes smoother. Especially in combination with modern tubeless tires, wide rims develop their full potential.

The Importance of Spoke Count and Lacing

The number of spokes also significantly influences the riding characteristics. Wheel sets with 24 or 28 spokes are lighter and aerodynamically advantageous, but require high-quality components and precise tuning. Wheels with 32 spokes offer a balanced compromise of weight, stability, and durability and are the ideal choice for most applications. For heavy terrain or higher rider weight, configurations with 36 spokes are even recommended, guaranteeing maximum robustness.

The lacing itself - whether radial, crossed or asymmetric - affects stiffness and power transmission. Modern spoke patterns are specifically tailored to the hubs used and the intended use.

The Interaction Between Wheels and Tires

A wheel set only develops its full potential in combination with the right tire. The rim width largely determines which tire dimensions work best. As a rule of thumb: the tire width should be about 1.8 to 2.5 times the inner rim width. Tires that are too narrow on wide rims lose lateral stability and cornering grip, while tires that are too wide on narrow rims tend to have unfavorable deformation behavior and an increased risk of punctures.

Modern tubeless systems benefit particularly from matched wheel-tire combinations. Lower pressures without the risk of pinch flats, better traction, and less weight due to the omission of tubes are the advantages. At the same time, tubeless requires tightly sealing rims and compatible tires - aspects that are already considered in high-quality wheel sets.

Custom Wheel Building - Tailored to You

While ready-made system wheels are an excellent choice for many, you quickly reach your limits with special requirements. This is where the strength of custom wheel building comes in. A custom-made wheel set takes into account your rider weight, riding style, preferred trail conditions, and individual preferences for materials and components. You decide on the hubs, rims, spokes, and nipples - we implement your wishes with craftsmanship precision.

The advantages are obvious: optimal tuning to your needs, free choice in quality and budget, and the possibility to realize extraordinary combinations. A custom-built wheel set by experienced hands is also more durable and can be specifically maintained or upgraded as needed. Our experts will be happy to advise you on the configuration and will build your dream wheel set precisely by hand in our workshop.

From 29 Inches to Fatbike - The Right Wheel for Every Use

Whether cross-country, trail, enduro, downhill, or fat biking - in our assortment you will find wheels for all disciplines and wheel sizes. Modern 29-inch wheels offer optimal roll-over behavior and high running smoothness, while smaller formats score with agility. Fat bike wheels with their extra-wide rims open up new terrain possibilities from sand to snow.

Use our filter options to specifically search by wheel size, application area, material, or manufacturer. If you have any questions or need advice, contact us - we will help you find the optimal setup for your bike.
