GARMIN Rear Light Varia RearVue 820 StVZO
It always starts the same way: you imagine the perfect ride. Endless country roads, hardly any traffic, steady pedaling, your head clear. Just you, your bike and the quiet whirring of the tires on the asphalt. It is precisely this romantic notion that keeps us getting back on our bikes. Reality usually catches up with you sooner than you thought. Even before the city is behind you, you are fighting your way through heavy traffic with impatient drivers on narrow side streets. Even when the road opens up, that feeling is still lingering: Who's coming up behind? How fast? How close?
The Garmin RearVue 820 was designed for precisely these moments. The radar defuses situations in which looking behind costs more than it brings.
Garmin were not only the first to develop a rear radar specifically for bicycles, but are still regarded as the technical benchmark in the product segment they created. The new Varia RearVue 820 seamlessly builds on this claim: Thanks to Garmin's most powerful and accurate radar to date and an extended field of view, you know what's happening behind you earlier - and have your head clear for what's ahead.
The radar monitors the traffic behind you from a distance of up to 175 meters and covers an extra wide viewing angle of 220°. This means that vehicles are not only detected earlier, but also more reliably, even if they are moving at a similar speed to you. In addition, the system distinguishes the size of approaching vehicles from small to large, which makes the assessment of the situation even more precise. At the same time, a bright rear light ensures high visibility in traffic, so that you can be seen by other road users from up to 350 meters away, both in low light conditions and during the day. In conjunction with a compatible Garmin Edge bike computer or the Garmin Varia app, approaching vehicles are displayed in color according to their danger level. The display is based on speed, vehicle size and the actual overtaking distance. Lane changes behind you are also visualized in real time. You receive warnings in exactly the way that suits you: visually on the display, acoustically via paired devices or - with selected Garmin smartwatches - also haptically on your wrist. Voice alerts are even possible in some cases. So you stay informed without having to constantly look behind you. Despite the powerful technology, the RearVue 820 remains pleasantly inconspicuous. The compact, elegant design and the new seat post mount fit almost all bikes, from road bikes and gravel bikes to commuters. Weighing just 90 grams, the system is hardly noticeable when riding. The IPX7 protection class ensures reliable operation even in rain and adverse weather conditions. The system is also impressive in terms of endurance: up to 16 hours of runtime in continuous light mode with active radar or up to 30 hours in radar-only mode offer sufficient reserves for long rides and demanding stages.
Garmin is one of the world market leaders in the field of mobile navigation and smart safety systems for road traffic. Founded in 1989 with five employees in the United States, the company now has over 9,000 employees worldwide and has established itself through the development of innovative products in the field of navigation and communication. To date, over 43 million Garmin devices have been sold, underlining the trust placed in the brand. The name "Garmin" is made up of the first names of the two founders, Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao, and reflects the close partnership and innovative spirit that has characterized the company from the very beginning.
A milestone was the launch of the GPS 100 in 1991, a navigation system for boaters and pilots. It was the first of its kind and marked the beginning of Garmin's focus on GPS technology.
In 2015, Garmin launched the Varia Radar, the first smart safety system for bicycles. This innovative rear light with integrated micro radar sensor was developed to offer cyclists more safety on the road by warning them of vehicles approaching from behind.
