With their profile height of 58 millimeters, the Zipp 404 wheels have been the suitable choice for road races, time trials or fast tours in varied terrain for decades. Equipped with the latest technologies, the current generation is equipped for use on modern racing bikes and seamlessly follows on from this heritage. At 23 millimeters, the inner rim width has increased significantly compared to its predecessors. As a result, the rims not only offer wider tires optimal support at low air pressures, they also integrate the tires extremely efficiently into the rim profile from an aerodynamic point of view. In addition, the hookless design creates an almost seamless transition between the tire and the rim sides. The elimination of the hooks also makes the rim flanges more robust in the event of punctures and contributes to the significant weight savings compared to previous versions. In combination with further optimizations in the structure of the carbon layers, the weight of the wheelset was reduced to 1530 grams (including rim tape and tubeless valves). An optimized rim base ensures easier tire installation.
Total System Efficiency (TSE)
The 404 wheels were developed using the TSE approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers that exist under realistic riding conditions. In addition to wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, these also include vibration losses in poor road conditions.
ABLC Dimples
The ABLC Dimples (recesses on the outside of the rim) help to reduce air resistance and ensure very high crosswind stability, especially at larger approach angles.
Zipp ZR1 hubs
The Zipp ZR1 hubs were developed in Germany over two years of development work. Its standout feature is the extremely finely toothed freewheel body design of the rear wheel hub with 66 locking points per wheel revolution, which allows the ZR1 to react to acceleration without delay. The fine toothing is achieved using a system of 6 pawls, of which 3 pawls each engage offset. The design of the seals is based on the high-end Cognition hubs and ensures more protection and durability with a larger dust cap behind the freewheel body and better seals.
NOTE: Due to the hookless profile, the Zipp 404 wheels are only suitable for using ETRTO-compliant tubeless tires. However, the corresponding tubeless tires can easily be used with tube on the wheels. You can find an overview of all compatible tires for your Zipp hookless wheelhere .
