The ZR1 are the latest generation of hubs for the Zipp Firecrest wheelsets, which have been tried and tested in the professional peloton. For the next evolutionary stage, the engineers from the German development office in Schweinfurt were turned to. After more than two years of development, the ZR1 hubs are now ready for the market. The most outstanding feature is the extremely finely toothed freewheel body design of the rear wheel hub with 66 locking points per wheel revolution, which allows the ZR1 to react to acceleration without any delay. The fine toothing is realized via a system of 6 pawls, of which 3 pawls engage offset. The freewheel body is designed to keep the pawls in place during disassembly for ease of maintenance. The hub flanges also ensure easy maintenance for classic J-bend spokes, which are easier to obtain and replace than straightpull spokes. The design of the seals is based on the high-end Cognition hubs and provides more protection and durability with a larger dust cap behind the freewheel body and better seals. The ZR1 was able to prove these properties in over 58,000 test kilometers. Thanks to their robust design, the hubs have also been certified for use on e-bikes with motors up to 55 Nm torque.
