SCOPE rear wheel 28" Road Artech Disc
"Winners have a plan, losers an excuse" - Scope has no excuse. Their products are made for winners and are bursting with innovation and quality. The engineers and designers from the Netherlands live for their passion, cycling. They tinker, try and test with just one goal in mind - to build the best wheelsets in the world. They rely on the latest know-how, use strong partnerships and incorporate scientific findings into their development work. You yourself can now become part of this challenge and be convinced by the outstanding wheels.
If you're looking for the ultimate in speed, you can't go past the Artech Disc. It combines perfect aerodynamics with a very low weight and is relatively insensitive to crosswinds thanks to the special rim surface. This saves you valuable energy in the battle against the clock, which you can then put to optimum use in the finish.
Hubs
The first highlight awaits you in the center of the rear wheel - the ARTECH hub. Unfortunately, its extravagant design is not visible on the disc wheel, but it was not created using a conventional manufacturing process. Its body was designed using a mathematical algorithm that takes into account the specific loads at various points in relation to the shape. This approach is also known as topology optimization. The result was a kind of bone structure, which represents the lightest construction while at the same time ensuring the required strength. The 3D printing process emerged as the only production method. This was then successfully implemented. The material chosen was an aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy, known as Scalmalloy for short, which is ideally suited to the required properties.
Of course, the inner values are also impressive. The axle runs on very high-quality SKF ball bearings, which are made of highly tempered steel and therefore have very low rolling resistance. They are also excellently sealed so that full performance is maintained even under the most adverse conditions.
The rear wheel is driven by a toothed pulley freewheel with 36 ratchets. Nothing ordinary was used there either, but the Diamond Ratchet System developed in-house was installed. The titanium discs are coated with a diamond-like, resistant carbon layer, which significantly minimizes the susceptibility to wear and still enables a reduction in weight.
Rims
In addition to the hubs, the rims are another important component of a wheel. These in particular have a significant influence on weight and agility. Of course, the makers at Scope have left nothing to chance here either. Carbon was chosen as the standard material. This is light, stiff and very robust if processed correctly.
The shape of the rims is also important. The AEA "Algorithm Enhanced Aerodynamics" algorithm was further developed, as a result of which not only the interaction between rim and tire was considered, but the entire bike and its components were included in the optimization.
Once the profile had been established, the Scope development engineers, together with the specialists from Aeroscales, examined various surface structures and found an ingenious model in nature: fish scales. Their specific shape has a stabilizing effect on water and air currents and prevents the braking turbulence that can occur on smooth surfaces - ideal for rims where low wind resistance is desired. The improved aerodynamics are particularly noticeable in crosswinds above and below a yaw angle of 10°. In addition, the scaled surface also creates a great design and a high recognition value for the disc wheel.
The low weight of the rim is due not only to the use of high-quality fibers but also to the intelligent ply structure. For example, on the inside of the rim, not the entire area has been reinforced, but only locally around the spoke holes. Although this increases the manufacturing effort, it guarantees high strength and rigidity and a lightweight rim.
It goes without saying that the wheelset is tubeless-compatible. Suitable valves and rim strips are already fitted so that you can benefit from the advantages of this system straight away. In addition, the hook sidewall ensures a secure fit of the tires, even when high air pressures are used with inner tubes.
Spokes
Of course, you won't find ordinary spokes in the Artech wheelsets. Scope use their own Carbonlite bladed spokes. In addition to their low weight, they score points with their extremely high tensile strength. For the best aerodynamics, the spokes on a disc wheel are of course fully clad, which prevents braking turbulence. Carbon fibers were also used for this in order not to negatively influence the acceleration behavior.
All these features allow Scope to release its wheels without weight restrictions. This is an absolute novelty in this weight class and testifies to the high quality of workmanship.
Warranty and crash replacement
The makers of Scope have absolute confidence in their products and offer a 3-year warranty on all material and manufacturing defects. All you have to do is register on their website within 30 days of purchase and they also offer a lifetime crash replacement. You can also find the current conditions for this at www.scopecycling.com/de/crash-replacement/.
