Hubs
When the engineers at Chris King started to develop the R45, everything was created under the motto "light & fast". Every detail was fine-tuned and the result is something to be proud of. Not only is it lighter than its predecessor, it is also considerably stiffer thanks to the 17 mm axle. As a result, it twists less and transmits steering commands very precisely. But one thing has remained the same: the soul of Chris King.
The enlarged hub flange allows shorter spokes to be used in wheel construction, which not only saves weight but also makes for a very stable and durable wheel.
At the heart of the hub are the ball bearings. These are also developed and produced directly at Chris King. This means they can be fully adapted to the specific loads and forces. Thanks to the multiple seals, the ingress of water or dirt is virtually impossible. Adjusting the bearing play is very simple and can also be carried out when the wheel is installed.
The unmistakable sound of the freewheel is the trademark of the rear wheel hubs. It is generated by the 45 grid points of the stainless steel toothed pulley. Thanks to this 3-piece ring drive system, every pedal stroke is immediately converted into propulsion without much idle travel.
These unique features are still part of the hubs in the 4th generation, but the inner workings have been fundamentally improved in terms of maintenance and service. Thanks to universal and versatile axle components, conversion to other hub or freehub standards has become much more cost-effective. The use of common bearing sizes guarantees better compatibility with each other. The disassembly and assembly of the hub has also been significantly simplified and the preload can be adjusted more precisely.
Rims
With the Duke Baccara RX and WRX rims, you get even more choice of ultra-light carbon rims for your gravel bike. Five different rim heights from 27 to 56 millimetres give you all the options you need to choose between aerodynamic properties and low weight.The large inner widths of 25 mm (RX version) and 28 / 29 mm (WRX version) give wide gravel tires very good support at low air pressures. The hook profile of the rims ensures a secure fit of the tire. The low weight is achieved by optimizing the use of materials. Particularly stressed areas are reinforced, while material is saved in uncritical areas. In addition, the amount of resin used has been further reduced without sacrificing stability.
Thanks to the SLR2 production technology developed by Duke, there is no need to rework or paint the rims during the production process. This alone can save up to 10% in weight and achieve a very high surface quality. The use of highly modular carbon fibers also improves the inherent damping, which is particularly beneficial for riding comfort.
The rims are definitely top of the class in terms of load capacity. With a maximum system weight of 120 kg, you can take a little more luggage with you.
The rims have an asymmetrical rim profile, which enables a more even spoke angle. This optimization of the spoke angle has a number of advantages. The spoke tension on both sides can be better aligned, which is beneficial to the durability of the spokes and the wheel as a whole. The normally direction-dependent lateral stiffness is also adjusted, making the wheel more stable.
Wheel construction at R2-Bike
Our wheels are assembled entirely by hand by our wheel builders. During the entire assembly process, great importance is attached to ensuring that not only the concentricity is correct, but also that the spoke tension is as even as possible. This special care allows us to give the first owner a lifetime guarantee against spoke breakage, as long as it was not caused by force.
