Silicon nitride has a number of material properties that make it almost perfect for bicycle bearings.
The material is extremely hard, wear-resistant, can be shaped into perfectly round balls with minimal tolerances and can be polished smoother than any metal. In addition, the material does not rust or corrode in any other way.
The bearing rings are made of hardened steel and polished. This is necessary to create a perfectly smooth running surface for the ceramic balls.
Kogel Bearings offers two different types of seals for different applications: Road Seals, a minimal contact seal designed for the smoothest possible running.
The Cross Seals, on the other hand, are designed for additional protection against external weather influences: Dust, water and mud. They are ideal for CX, MTB or road bike use where maximum durability is important.
Kogel Bearings is aware that ceramic bearings have a poor reputation in terms of durability. This is mostly due to the fact that suboptimal bearing quality is sold as high quality.
A bearing must be designed and manufactured in a balanced way: the hardness of the balls must be combined with equally smooth and hard bearing races. The bearing cage, seals and greases must be matched in order to work perfectly.
If one of the components does not fit perfectly, it reduces the performance of the entire bearing. The result is increased resistance, a shortened service life or even total failure of the bearing.
To prove that Kogel Bearings believes in its products, they guarantee that the bearings will run flawlessly for at least 2 years.
If something breaks in the first year, Kogel will repair or replace the product, no questions asked.
After the first year, a service must be carried out. If the bearing is serviced by a qualified mechanic, i.e. cleaned, relubricated and the seals replaced,
the warranty is extended by a further year.
With this bottom bracket, many cranks with a 30 mm shaft fit into frames which are designed for BB86 bottom brackets. Please make sure that your crank has a sufficiently long shaft before buying. Older BB30 cranks with short shafts, such as Specialized FACT or SRAM BB30 Short Spindle do not fit.
With this bottom bracket, BB30 cranks with 30 mm shafts fit in frames with 68 or 73 mm (OSBB) housing widths which are intended for BB30 bottom brackets. The BB30 design is a real challenge for the bearings. If durability is more important than the last few milliwatts, it is advisable to use bearings with a cross seal. For OSBB, check whether the crank has a sufficiently long shaft.
