Hope's flagship for gravel use naturally offers you the usual quality. As usual, the wheels from Hope are robust and reliable and give you the opportunity to leave your mark on rough surfaces.
The rim height is almost double that of the RX24 and rolls at 40 mm. This is a dimension that creates a pleasant symbiosis of aerodynamics and the corresponding fast look. This design of the rim will probably trigger the racer in you, and that's intentional.
Could there be more? Of course, the CX-Ray stainless steel spokes cut through the wind with razor-sharp precision and the change of material from aluminum on the RX 24 to carbon on the RX40 rim means that less weight remains on the wheel despite the increased rim height. As both models have the same hub, this means that this weight has been reduced at the outermost point of the rotating mass. The weight saving for the rear rim is therefore up to 152 g and 135 g for the front rim.
The RX40 rims in particular contribute to their resilience. Made of high-quality carbon, they can accommodate tires up to 60 mm wide with their large inner width of 25.5 mm. This provides additional grip and comfort. The hookless design of the rim also supports the construction in terms of comfort, stability and weight.
As is a matter of course these days, the RX40 can be converted for tubeless use. A set of rim tape and valve is already included in the scope of delivery.
The Pro 5 hubs from the English cult manufacturer from Barnoldswick are at the center. The experience gained from 30 years of designing and manufacturing high-quality drive elements has been incorporated into their development with the aim of improving proven technology in order to meet the demands of current and future bicycle technology.
The design of the rear hub differs significantly from its predecessor. Its enlarged body generates more rigidity without increasing the weight. This is noticeable above all in a much more direct ride. At the same time, the diameter of the spoke flange has been increased. This simplifies the construction of very stable wheels.
The highlight of the rear wheel hub is the new 6-pawl freehub system in offset design. This is characterized by the fact that three of the six pawls are always engaged when riding in order to distribute the load evenly. In addition, the freewheel toothing has been increased from 44 (Pro 4) to 54 teeth, resulting in a total of 108 engagement points and a low free travel of just 3.33°. In addition, some material has been removed from the springs of the pawls, which slightly reduces the spring force and lowers their resistance. Hope has thus achieved the right balance between smooth running and durability with the Pro 5.
Perfect workmanship is typical of Hope. The hub can withstand negative external influences for a long time, which is also thanks to the high-quality anodization and the very well-sealed stainless steel industrial bearings. Should the ravages of time eventually take their toll, it can be dismantled and serviced with little effort. It can also be easily converted to a different hub standard.
