Barmate - handlebar geometry redefined!
With the Barmate, BikeYoke is expanding its range in the cockpit area and at the same time providing an innovative approach to rethinking and redefining the geometry of handlebars. The background to this paradigm shift is a market analysis that the team carried out on handlebar heights in 2020. The starting point was the assumption that the term "rise" of a handlebar is usually understood to mean the vertical height difference between the mounting axis of the stem and the start of the straight part of the handlebar. It turned out that this specification varies between manufacturers and makes it difficult to compare different handlebars with the same rise values. In fact, the rise of a handlebar today does not correspond to its actual height, which 99 percent of riders intuitively associate with it.
This assumption probably dates back to the early days of mountain biking, when handlebars did not have an upsweep and the rise defined the actual height of the handlebars. However, handlebar geometries have evolved and been optimized. Nowadays, almost all mountain bike handlebars have an upsweep, which means that the indication of the rise in relation to the actual height of a handlebar is outdated and proves to be useless for comparing the real height of handlebars.
With the Barmate handlebars, BikeYoke now wants to introduce the terms "stack" and "reach" as a measure for the geometry of handlebars and establish them as the new standard. These terms are of course not new, as they are already familiar from frame geometry. The "stack" of the Barmate corresponds to the actual height of the handlebars, while the "reach" replaces the previous term "backsweep" and is added to or subtracted from the reach of the frame. Both values change when the handlebars are turned from the neutral position specified by BikeYoke or shortened in length.
The EFBE ISO certification and the unrestricted approval for enduro and downhill use (category 5) show that these handlebars deliver what they promise. It is available in two different stack sizes: 50 mm and 65 mm. In addition to this theoretical background, the Barmate also impresses with its unmistakable visual finish. The bent and butted handlebars are first brushed by hand, then the logos and markings are lasered on. Finally, the handlebars are anodized, which gives them their unique look - a real must-have for every BikeYoke fan.
Stack - the actual height of the handlebars
BikeYoke uses the term 'stack', familiar from frame geometry, to standardize the specification of the actual handlebar height. The handlebar height is specified as the vertical height difference between the mounting axis of the stem and the axis in the grip area at the end of the handlebars. This value changes if the handlebars are shortened or turned from the neutral position defined by BikeYoke.
Reach - and the position of the hand in relation to the axis of rotation of the handlebars
The general rule of thumb is that the shorter the stem, the faster and more direct the steering input. But what influence does the rearward bend of the handlebars (backsweep) have on steering input? If a short stem is combined with a handlebar with little backsweep, the steering feel is comparable to that of a longer stem in combination with a handlebar with a lot of backsweep. The decisive factor is therefore how many millimetres (setback) the geometry of the handlebars sets the position of the hands back. BikeYoke uses the well-known term "reach" to define and standardize the setback. This value specifies the horizontal distance between the mounting axis of the handlebar and the axis in the grip area of the handlebar end in the neutral position. Like the stack, the reach of the handlebars is added to or subtracted from the reach of the frame. Of course, the reach of the handlebars changes if they are turned from the neutral position defined by BikeYoke or if their overall length is shortened.
