In order to keep the chain securely in position even without a chain guide, the teeth have a special profile consisting of narrow and wide teeth in alternation. The teeth are also shaped in such a way that in muddy conditions, the chain ring removes the mud very well itself. Dirt and mud are effectively removed when the chain runs over and friction in the drive train is minimized.
