ABSOLUTE BLACK Oversized rear derailleur cage system Hollowcage | Shimano Ultegra 8100
With the Hollowcage, the guys at Absolute Black are taking a completely new approach to oversized derailleur cages. The monoplate design is lighter and more aerodynamic than any solution previously available on the market.
Stiff rollers
The widespread opinion is that a stiff cage also means good shifting. However, if you take a closer look at how the derailleur works, you quickly realize that the shifting precision depends largely on the upper roller. As the upper pulley is installed directly in the pivot point, the stiffness of the cage hardly plays a role in shifting precision. Rather, a rigid bearing of the roller is decisive. In contrast to other manufacturers, Absolute Black uses oversized bearings to reduce the lateral play of the pulleys to a minimum and thus increase shifting performance.
Flexible cage
The design of the cage allows a certain alignment of the lower pulley to keep the chain running as straight as possible. In addition to the smooth running of the chain, this special feature also reduces running noise.
Xring pulley
The patent-pending Xring pulley uses special rubber bands to reduce chain noise by 12-14dB compared to the standard Dura Ace pulleys. This corresponds to a noise reduction of around 60%.
High tooth profile
Some of the competitors use pulleys with a very flat tooth profile in their oversized rear derailleur cages. However, a tooth that is too flat will never guide the chain to another gear as precisely as a high tooth can. Absolute Black uses very high teeth on the upper roller of the hollow cage for precisely this reason. In combination with the large and stiff bearings, this results in the best possible shifting performance.
The game of saving watts
There are many variables that can contribute to saving a watt or two. The hollow cage uses lightly greased all-ceramic bearings for maximum service life. Thanks to the high tooth profile, the system requires little cage tension and still shifts with outstanding precision. The aligning lower roller also saves some power as the friction in the chain run is minimized.
The cage fits Ultegra R8150 rear derailleurs. The maximum sprocket size is 34 teeth.
IMPORTANT:
When traveling, please remember to remove the complete rear derailleur with an Allen key, as very few bicycle transport bags offer sufficient space for such large rear derailleur cages.
