QVIST rear hub | Classic 6-hole 12x148 mm Boost thru axle freehub SRAM XD | silver
The still young brand QVIST was founded out of a passion for cycling and a preference for developing, manufacturing and riding bicycle components ourselves. QVIST is a completely rider-owned and -operated company that does not jump on every marketing hype, but only implements those topics that they themselves are convinced of. Their focus is on the love of cycling in all its facets, whether you are a mountain biker, gravel rider, road cyclist, commuter, bikepacker or cafe racer. Most of the innovative products are developed and manufactured near Dresden. The technical complexity of hubs in particular fascinates the engineers at QVIST and offers sufficient potential for improvement to optimize the drive in terms of performance and maintenance. Cycling in particular offers the opportunity to experience and enjoy nature in its entirety. For this reason, the founders decided on the name "QVIST", which is the outdated spelling of the Swedish word for "twig" - and the freewheel mechanism developed and patented by QVIST is somewhat similar to the branches and twigs of a fir tree.
QVIST's pride and joy is the rear hub with the patented Double Ratchet System, which has 120 engagement points, 60 of which are engaged simultaneously, resulting in the unique and rich stereo freehub sound. The hub has been optimized to provide an optimal balance of reliability, robustness and low weight. This is why the hub has a 17 mm axle, large steel bearings and all parts made of aluminum are made of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. Furthermore, the sprockets are made of hardened, high-strength steel. The surface of the freehub body is hard anodized to make the aluminium surface more robust and wear-resistant. Another important feature of QVIST hubs is their ease of servicing. No special tools are required for disassembly, maintenance and reassembly. In addition, QVIST only uses standard sizes for the hub bearings, making it easy to obtain replacement bearings.
Double Ratchet System
With their patented Double Ratchet System, the engineers at QVIST have managed to achieve a 3° pressure angle for the first time. This was previously only possible with freewheels with pawl freewheels, but could not achieve the robustness of toothed pulley freewheels. Conventional toothed pulley freewheel systems consist of two toothed pulleys in which the number of teeth is limited by the size of the toothed pulleys and therefore regulates the number of engagement points. However, these freewheel systems are considered to be particularly robust and reliable, as all teeth are engaged at the same time and the forces are distributed evenly over a large engagement surface.
The double ratchet system is characterized by the fact that it consists of three toothed pulleys which engage alternately, thus doubling the number of engagement points. The freewheel shaft transmits the drive force from the outer pulleys to the double-sided middle pulley. By moving the mechanism to the inside of the hub and behind the large bearing of the hub shell, the hub is stiffer overall and at the same time the service life of the bearings is significantly increased thanks to the even load distribution. On the one hand, the large main bearing serves as a seal for the freewheel mechanism; on the other hand, a larger diameter of the toothed pulleys can be realized and thus the contact surface for power transmission can be increased in order to increase the durability of the freewheel system.
The engagement only took place on one side of the freewheel system in order to continue to guarantee the proven reliability. With 60 teeth per pulley, the Double Ratchet System achieves 120 points of engagement and an engagement angle of 3°.
Note: The seal of the main bearing is designed in such a way that it needs approx. 200 km to grind in, during this time the rear hub is slightly slower.
