The Lightweight Fernweg wheels have been among the fastest and most luxurious wheels for triathletes and time trialists for years. With the EVO Pro version, the Friedrichshafen-based company has managed to put their aero weapons on a diet and save a whopping 130 grams of weight without compromising on stiffness and durability.A weight of just 1565 grams with a rim height of 63 millimeters makes the Fernweg EVO Pro even more interesting for racing bikes on hilly terrain. The EVO Pro version is equipped with high-quality CeramicSpeed ball bearings for even lower riding resistance. But the Fernweg EVO Pro wheels are not only impressive in terms of their technical data. For the best possible riding experience, Lightweight has also paid particular attention to less performance-oriented aspects such as the look, the feel and even the noise of the rotating wheels.
The wide and bulbous rims of the Fernweg EVO Pro perfectly integrate 25 millimeter wide tires in a streamlined manner and offer very good support for tires up to 32 millimeters wide. Compared to its predecessor, the inner rim width has increased to 18.2 millimetres and the EVO rims are equipped with a tubeless-ready profile. In the wind tunnel, the rims are particularly impressive in realistic crosswind conditions. Not only are they on a par with the market leaders in terms of air resistance with the same rim height, the rims are more stable in crosswinds compared to the competition and the forces acting on the steering are lower. In practice, this can mean the difference between being able to stay in the aerodynamically favorable seating position in the trailer or having to reach for the basic handlebars in windy conditions. The use of special CFRP fibers in combination with a new layer structure makes it even more stable and durable. For the rider, this means even more efficient power transmission, excellent handling and, above all, even more speed. Despite the enormous stiffness, the comfort factor has also been increased to protect the rider's strength on long rides.
In addition, the laminated carbon spokes ensure the high rigidity of the wheels, which convert every pedal stroke and every acceleration into propulsion with virtually no loss. The highly modular full carbon spokes specially developed for disc brakes also help to transmit braking forces better and ensure extremely precise braking behavior. The increased inner rim width of 18.2 millimetres and the tubeless-ready profile ensure a wider range of applications.
The Fernweg EVO PRO is made from LCC carbon fibers (Lightweight Custom Composite), which are already used in a similar form in the aerospace industry. Their special combination of thin prepregs and highly rigid fiber types makes it possible to reduce the wall thickness without compromising on durability and safety. The foam core inside the rims (Active Foam Core) also makes it possible to produce wheels with a lower weight. The Active Foam Core not only prevents deformation of the rims, it also has a vibration-damping effect and ensures a pleasantly smooth ride.
Smooth running and durability are ensured by the inner workings based on DT-Swiss EXP hubs, which are concealed under the innovative Pentagon SL carbon hub shell. Compared to the standard version, the weight of the SL hubs has been reduced by a further 60 g. In addition to its special appearance, the design prevents the hub body from overheating on long descents.
