ZIPP front wheel 28 "454 NSW Carbon Clincher | Tubeless | Center Lock | 12x100 mm thru axle
The 454 NSW is the ultimate road racing and fast ride wheelset for the performance minded rider. With its aerodynamic efficiency, crosswind stability and its low weight, it is ideally suited for all conditions and route profiles.
Despite the very large inner rim width of 23 millimeters, the 454 NSW have been optimized for 25 millimeter wide tubeless tires. The large inner width not only ensures lower rolling resistance, it also allows the tires to be driven with lower air pressures in order to reduce vibration losses and increase comfort. The hookless design creates an almost seamless transition between the tire and the rim flanks and ensures extremely low air resistance. The omission of the hooks also makes the rim flanges more robust in the event of punctures and contributes to the significant weight savings compared to the previous versions. In combination with further optimizations in the structure of the carbon layers, the weight of the wheelset could be reduced to 1358 grams. That makes the 454 NSW wheels extremely agile and light-footed. The new 454 NSW was able to prove its strengths in a field test commissioned by Zipp. Compared to the previous version, the rider with a system weight of 85 kg (including bike) needed 10 watt less pedaling power to maintain a speed of 40 km / h.
Total System Efficiency (TSE)
The 454 NSW wheels were developed using the TSE approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers that existed under realistic driving conditions. In addition to wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, this also includes vibration losses in poor road conditions.
Zipp Cognition hubs
The Cognition V2 hub set developed in Germany impresses with its unique freewheel system. The system is similar to a toothed pulley freewheel, but due to the special arrangement of the toothed disks (axial clutch) it generates only half as much frictional resistance when rolling as a conventional pawl system. The second version of the hubs has an improved sealing system and the freewheel mechanism responds even faster.
Introduced with the Zipp 858 NSW, the 454 also got the aerodynamically extremely efficient sawtooth profile that was modeled on the fin ends of the humpback whale and allows the rim height to vary between 53 and 58 millimeters. In conjunction with the newly designed hexagonal ABLC dimples (depressions on the outer sides of the rim), the design ensures very high crosswind stability, especially at larger angles of attack.
With the ImPress graphics technology, the Zipp lettering is printed directly on the rim. This allows the recessed structures on the rims to develop their full effect.
NOTE: Due to the hookless profile, the Zipp 454 NSW wheels are only suitable for use with ETRTO-compliant tubeless tires. The corresponding tubeless tire can, however, be ridden with a tube on the wheels without any problems.
