STURDY CYCLES Crank Titanium Road & Gravel | SRAM 8-bolt 30 mm Spindle
Beyond the limits of traditional manufacturing, the 3D-printed titanium crank stands as a testament to craftsmanship excellence and technical innovation. The crank arms are manufactured using the state-of-the-art Cold Metal Fusion 3D printing process. The print head combines fine titanium powder with a liquid substance that holds the particles together but does not melt the metal itself. Each layer is precisely applied to the previous one and cured, gradually creating the final shape of the crank. After the model is fully built up, the binder material is removed through a special debinding process. This step takes place in an oven, which breaks down the non-metallic parts while retaining the titanium structural material. The bonded titanium is then sintered at a high temperature. This process finally bonds the titanium particles into a robust structure with high strength and density, giving the crank its exceptional strength and durability. Excessive grinding and polishing of the crank arms is deliberately avoided. This preserves the rough surface and contributes to a unique appearance.
The crankset consists of a 115 millimeter wide titanium shaft and titanium 3D-printed crankarms with 170, 172.5 or 175 millimeter arm lengths and is specially designed for road and gravel bikes. The crankshaft with a diameter of 30 millimeters is designed for bottom bracket widths of 68 and 73 millimeters, provided an external bottom bracket is used. The SRAM 8-hole standard enables direct attachment of compatible chainrings to the crank. All necessary mounting bolts are included in the scope of delivery. No special tools are required for mounting on the bike. The crank is easy to install with a 10 mm hex key and just as easy to remove thanks to the integrated puller. An aluminum preload ring holds the crank in the correct position before the crank bolt is fully tightened. Sturdy recommends using the enclosed washers when installing the pedals.
STURDY CYCLES
Sturdy Cycles, a British manufacturer of bespoke titanium bicycles and components, was founded in 2014 by Tom Sturdy. The innovative company is based in Frome, a picturesque town in the county of Somerset in the South West of England. Tom combined his experience as a former elite athlete with his academic background in aerospace engineering and sports biomechanics to create a simple idea: to create bikes that are not only technically superior, but also customized to the rider's needs and desires. He specialized early on in the processing of titanium and combined traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. Today, Tom Sturdy is considered a pioneer in the integration of titanium 3D printing processes in bicycle and component production and inspires with his passion for precise design and masterful execution.
