KOGEL BEARINGS Oversized derailleur cage System Speed Kolossos | Shimano GRX 2x 11-speed / 12-speed | black
In Greek mythology, the word Kolossos stands for a statue that is many times larger than the original. If you take a look at the oversized rear derailleur cage from Kogel, the name seems very apt.
In addition to reduced friction, the focus during development was on perfect shifting precision and rigidity of the system. The suffix "Speed" gives an idea of what this particular model is all about: Exactly, an optimized version that does its job particularly quickly & aerodynamically.
The team around Ard Kessels, the founder of Kogel Bearings, is always looking for ways to further improve their components and their performance. After five years of development, they now present the most advanced rear derailleur cage made in El Paso, Texas.
What's new? The design language was inspired by the Aero Kolossos and thus stiffness and aerodynamics could be improved. The lower sprocket has been increased from 19 teeth to 20 teeth. A larger sprocket means less friction, which in turn means more speed. For further performance gains, the proven all-ceramic bearings in CR (Corrosion Resistant) design from Kogel are used in conjunction with the Road seals.
Kogel CR ceramic bearings - Corrosion Resistant
The special features of Kogel bearings are their long service life and low friction. They are also the only major brand to offer two different seal options. These are the Cross seals, a close-fitting seal that sits closer to the bearing to protect against moisture, sand and mud, or the Road seals, which are recommended for less friction, especially in dry and clean conditions.
However, there was one point that bothered the team around Ard Kessels: rust, i.e. corrosion.
Seals not only have a job on the outside, they are also supposed to keep the grease inside the bearing. But with heavy use, especially when wet, a little water can make its way inside. This leads to surface rust on the outside of the bearing. Although this does not affect performance, it does not look good.
Bearing rings are made of either chrome steel (also known as bearing steel) or stainless steel. The former is extremely hard and is perfect for the increased hardness of ceramic balls, but it is not particularly resistant to corrosion. Stainless steel is much better at this, but is around 20% softer than chrome steel, which means that the bearings wear out more quickly.
So the solution is to combine the strength of chrome steel with the rust-proof properties of stainless steel, and that is exactly what Kogel has done. The new Kogel CR bearings are the result of two years of development work, which has resulted in a specially treated and hardened stainless steel race that has the same strength and toughness as the original Kogel bearings.
NOTE:
Typically, a new chain is required when fitting these significantly larger rollers.
When traveling, please remember to remove the complete rear derailleur with an Allen key, as very few bicycle transport bags offer sufficient space for such large rear derailleur cages.
This version is designed for 2-speed drivetrains. If you are looking for a cage for a 1-speed GRX drivetrain, this would be this one.
