When Chris King's engineers started developing the R45, everything was created under the motto "light & fast". Every detail was fine-tuned and the result is something to be proud of. Not only is it lighter than its predecessor, it is also considerably stiffer thanks to the 17 mm axle.
The unmistakable sound of the freewheel is the trademark of the rear hubs. It is generated by the 45 grid points of the stainless steel toothed pulley. Thanks to this 3-piece RingDrive system, every pedal stroke is immediately converted into propulsion without much idle travel. At the heart of the hub are the ball bearings. These are also developed and produced directly at Chris King. This means they can be fully adapted to the specific loads and forces. Thanks to the multiple seals, the ingress of water or dirt is virtually impossible. Before installation, each bearing is checked by hand for any quality defects and sorted out if necessary. Adjusting the bearing play is very simple and can also be carried out with the bearing installed. With the help of the Chris King hub tool set, which can be purchased as an option, replacing the bearings and maintaining the hub is child's play.
These unique features are still part of the hubs in the 4th generation, but the inner workings have been fundamentally improved in terms of maintenance and servicing. Thanks to universal and versatile axle components, conversion to other hub or freehub standards has become much more cost-effective. The use of common bearing sizes guarantees better compatibility with each other. The disassembly and assembly of the hub has also been significantly simplified and preload can be set more precisely.
