ABBEY BIKE TOOLS Chain Wear Gauge LL Chain Wear | green
This gauge goes in a different direction than other gauges and that is meant literally. Abbey takes the precision of chain wear gauges to a new level. The CNC milled gauge is manufactured with a tolerance of 0.005 mm. In order to meet the company's own standards and guarantee accuracy, both inspection and production are carried out in-house.
Linear wear (elongation, elongation of the chain)
The elongation of the chain is checked as standard, but the diameter of the chain rollers is not usually taken into account. The diameter of the rollers is particularly important for Sram's flattop chains, as this roller diameter is somewhat larger. With LL Chain Wear, the roller is centered between the hooks and the center of the pin is found for each chain, so the starting point of the measurement is clearly defined. Possible wear of the roller itself therefore has no effect on the measurement. You can then use the holes to read off the percentage elongation of the chain, simply look for the hole where the pin is completely visible. The chain should be replaced between 0.5 and 0.7 percent elongation.
Lateral (sideways) wear
Have you ever thought about the wear caused by the bending of the chain? Especially with 1x12 drivetrains, the sometimes extreme chain line (shearing of the chain) is very wear-intensive. This leads to a decrease in shifting performance and, as a result, a higher load on all components involved. For this measurement, the chain must be removed and positioned like the pictogram on the gauge. If the lateral deformation reaches point six, the chain should be replaced.
