The 858 NSW wheels are Zipp's ultimate aero weapon. Thanks to their rim height of 82 to 85 millimeters, they have a large sail area and help you to set new records wherever speed is important. The handling, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of wheels with a rim height that is 20 millimeters lower. Thanks to their wave-shaped, patented sawtooth design, they are extremely stable in crosswinds. In addition, the weight has been reduced by 243 grams (per wheelset) compared to the previous version, which allows the 858 NSW to accelerate easily and also makes it interesting for undulating road races and as all-round road bike wheels. Thanks to the Zipp Carbon Internal Reinforcement Technology (CiR), the rims could be made 10% lighter and are just as stable as the previous version. The inner rim width, which has been increased to 23 millimeters, in conjunction with the hookless profile, integrates 28 millimeter wide tires aerodynamically perfectly and you can benefit from the better rolling resistance properties and greater comfort of wider road bike tires.
Total System Efficiency (TSE)
The 858 NSW wheels were developed under the TSE approach. The development goal was to find the best possible impeller design to overcome the speed barriers that exist under realistic driving conditions. In addition to wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, this also includes vibration losses in poor road conditions.
Zipp Cognition hubs
The Cognition V2 hub set, developed in Germany, impresses with its unique freewheel system. The system is similar to a toothed disk freewheel, but due to the special arrangement of the toothed disks (axial clutch) it only generates half as much frictional resistance when rolling as a conventional ratchet system. The second version of the hubs has an improved sealing system and the freewheel mechanism is even more responsive.
Sawtooth design
The aerodynamically extremely efficient sawtooth profile, which was modeled on the fin ends of the humpback whale, varies between a rim height of 82 to 85 millimeters. In combination with the newly designed hexagonal ABLC dimples (recesses on the outside of the rim), the design ensures very high crosswind stability, especially at larger angles of attack.
ImPress graphics
With the ImPress graphic technology, the Zipp lettering is printed directly onto the rim. This allows the recessed structures on the rims to unfold their full effect.
NOTE: Due to the hookless profile, the Zipp 858 NSW wheels are only suitable with the use of ETRTO-compliant tubeless tires. However, the corresponding tubeless tires can be ridden with a tube on the wheels without any problems. You can find an overview of all compatible tires for your Zipp hookless wheelhere .
