Gravel bikes are becoming increasingly popular among cyclists. The advantages are obvious. They have a more comfortable geometry than road bikes, are excellent off the beaten track and are suitable for longer journeys. However, conventional road bike components reach their limits on these bikes. This is why Shimano has developed its own groupsets especially for this type of bike.
Shift/brake levers SHIMANO GRX Di2 disc brake ST-RX815 + BR-RX810 Flat Mount 2x11-speed | Set
The GRX shift/brake levers have a different grip geometry and surface. The upper bumps have been raised to prevent you from slipping forwards on rough surfaces, while a recessed thumb recess ensures a firm grip on difficult terrain at all times. And to prevent your hands from sliding back and forth even when riding in the rain, a non-slip material has been selected which also has good damping properties and therefore increases comfort.
The Di2 gear system is particularly advantageous off-road. You only need a small click to throw the chain onto the next sprocket. This is quick and precise, and your hand can continue to guide the handlebars safely at all times. You can freely program the shifting logic via the E-Tube platform and check the status of the system.
The brake lever has also been designed so that you can stop quickly at any time from any grip position. It is slightly bent inwards and the axis of the lever has been moved upwards. This improves ergonomics while reducing the amount of hand force required. The reach of the brake lever can also be individually adjusted so that bikers with smaller hands can also ride safely. The flat-mount brake calliper improves braking performance and modulation under all conditions. Maintenance work, such as bleeding or changing pads, is also easy to carry out. The L03A brake pads with cooling fins help to keep brake temperatures low, especially on long descents.
Crank SHIMANO GRX FC-RX810 | 2x11-speed
The FC-RX810 crank comes with a typical gravel gradation. With the large 48-tooth chainring, you can make good speed on the flat, but with the small 31-tooth chainring you can also climb longer ascents with ease. The chainline has been shifted outwards to make room in the frame for wider tires. Nevertheless, the Q-factor of 151 mm has remained in the green zone. The typically excellent Shimano workmanship and aerodynamically shaped elements on the outer chainring make the crankset a long-lasting and reliable companion on your tours.
FD-RX815 Di2 front derailleur
The GRX Di2 FD-RX815 front derailleur has been designed in such a way that it is adapted to the specific characteristics of gravel bikes. These usually ride with wider tires than road bikes. As a result, there was a risk that the inner chain guide could rub against them or collect dirt due to the small clearance. To avoid this and create more space in the frame, the chain line was moved 2.5 mm outwards and is now 46 mm. The GRX front derailleur has also been adapted to this. It also manages to bridge a chainring capacity of 17 teeth and thus extend the gear range.
The advantages of electronic shifting are particularly evident in the front derailleur. Changing gears is much faster and more precise and requires less effort. This increases safety and gives you advantages in hectic racing situations. Typical problems with mechanical derailleur groupsets, such as the front derailleur shifting out of position, no longer exist thanks to electronics. The Auto-Trim function saves valuable time, as the front derailleur is automatically readjusted depending on the gear ratio, making it practically impossible for the chain to rub against the cage.
Rear derailleur RD-RX815 Di2
There is a risk of the chain jumping off the sprockets, especially on bumpy surfaces. Shimano gravel rear derailleurs can prevent this from happening. A built-in stabilizer reliably prevents chain slap and keeps everything in place. This can also be switched off when riding on asphalt roads.
The electronic GRX RX815 rear derailleur ensures high shifting precision even under the toughest conditions. When the shifter is actuated, the chain changes sprocket without the use of force. Even under medium and heavy loads, gear changes are performed without any major noise development.
Thanks to the compact Shadow design, the rear derailleur sits closer to the frame. This slim low-profile design not only cuts a fine figure visually, but also protects the rear derailleur from damage or branches reaching into the path in the event of a fall.
CS-R8000/CS-HG800 cassette
The cassette impresses with its high shifting performance and wear resistance. Gear changes are extremely precise, meaning that shifting pauses are very short. An intelligent material mix of aluminum, carbon and steel increases the service life while at the same time reducing the weight of the cassette. The largest 4 sprockets of the CS-R8000 are connected by an aluminium spider and the following 2 sprockets by a carbon spider. You can choose between 3 different gradations for the cassette.
CN-HG701 chain
The adapted geometry of the directional chain offers outstanding shifting performance in every situation. Even mud and dirt have little chance of attacking the sophisticated design. In combination with SIL-TEC, Shimano's new surface coating, ultra-low friction is generated and thanks to the use of embedded fluorine particles, system performance is improved. The coating reduces wear, driving noise and sliding friction. It is also dirt-repellent and abrasion-resistant, which significantly increases the durability of components treated with SIL-Tec.
Distributor A Cockpit | Junction A SM-EW90A
The three inputs are used to connect the STIs to the Junction B distributor. As the brake/shift levers each have 3 separate inputs, a total of 4 additional shift buttons can be connected in addition to the STIs. For example, a shift button can be positioned on the upper and lower links. At the same time, the junction serves as the Di2 control center. Numerous settings can be made to the shift logic via USB cable using the E-Tube software.
Distributor A Cockpit | Junction A SM-EW90B
With a total of 5 inputs, all 8 or 4 shifting components on each side of the Di2 groupsets can be connected:
- Brake/shift lever (STI)
- Lower link shift button
- Upper link shift button
- Time trial shift lever or time trial brake/shift lever
At the same time, the SM-EW90B unit can be connected to compatible bike computers via ANT+. This then provides an overview of important data such as battery level, gear engaged and can be coupled with other ANT+ devices.
Distributor A Cockpit | Junction A EW-RS910 internal
Distributor and charging socket for installation in the handlebar end of Di2-compatible handlebars or compatible frames. The handlebars must have a hole at the bottom on the left-hand side for clean installation of the Di2 cables.
Note: Y-cable EW-JC130 is required for the operation of two STI units, but not for Synchro - Shift (only one shift lever for front and rear).
Distributor B | Junction B SM-JC41 internal
The Junction B distributor unit has 4 inputs and connects the battery, the rear derailleur and the cables coming from the cockpit. The internal distributor is housed in the down tube of the frame. All shift cables can therefore be routed invisibly in the frame if it is prepared for this.
BT-DN110 internal battery
Integrated battery of the latest generation, which is recessed in the seat post or steerer tube. The internally routed cable gives the road bike a tidy appearance. The integration of the battery into the frame also reduces the number of attachments that stand in the wind. The battery can remain in the bike for charging. The battery consists of two high-quality lithium-ion cells. These cells offer a high capacity and last for around 2000 km with numerous gear changes. The lithium-ion technology allows the battery to be used in a wide temperature range from -20 to 60°C and can therefore be used in all seasons.
Bottom bracket (for an extra charge)
High-quality and multi-sealed bearings round off the overall package of the Ultegra groupset. The bearings are designed in all common standards and shine with the silky smooth running typical of Shimano.
