On wheels with brake discs, the braking force is generated at the hub and transmitted to the rim via the spokes. So basically from the inside out of the wheel. As rotation takes place, the braking force is converted into torque, which is transmitted from the hub to the rim via the spokes. This is why so many disc brake wheels, including aero rim wheels, feature round spokes. Because light aero spokes with a flattened middle part are too thin and too flexible to be able to absorb these torque loads sufficiently!
The Wing Spoke made of cold-drawn Fagersta T302+ stainless steel (Sweden Steel) elegantly solves this problem by using its elliptical shape to take advantage of the flat, light and aerodynamically more favorable but weak aero spoke and the stronger, but less aerodynamic and heavy classic round spoke pulls. As a result, it has the diameter required for torque transmission and at the same time favorable and superior aerodynamic properties with low weight!
