An all-mountain wheelset with textile spokes, can that work? So far, there have been many approaches from well-known manufacturers, but all of them have produced unsatisfactory results. The young and extremely innovative think tank PI ROPE from Chemnitz, Saxony, has made the impossible possible in cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz. The result is a textile spoke made of braided Vectran synthetic fibers.
The material is extremely robust, resistant to aging and weathering, and has better mechanical properties than its steel counterpart. The tensile strength and damping is many times higher, but the weight of the fibers is five times lower. These are optimal prerequisites for a very light, but nevertheless hard-wearing wheel, as the rotating masses are minimized in the important outer areas and the flexibility of the Vectran textile spokes prevents permanent plastic deformation at high peak loads.
The shapely PI ROPE Light hubs rotate in the center of the wheelset. Your name says it all. With around 290g on the scales, they are really stingy with weight. Nevertheless, rigidity and processing quality leave nothing to be desired. Generously dimensioned bearings ensure smooth running, durability and high steering precision. They are also perfectly sealed against external influences.
In the rear wheel, a toothed disc freewheel brings irrepressible propulsion. Due to the very fine grid with 42 teeth, the idle travel is minimized to a maximum of 8.5°, which has a very positive effect on fast acceleration. The risk of a defect has also been reduced because the forces that occur can be better distributed than with the ratchet system. The freewheel body made of steel guarantees robustness and durability, which will not show any signs of wear even after thousands of kilometers. In addition, the typical sound draws many jealous looks at you.
Like all Newmen carbon rims, the built-in Nemwen Advanced SL A.30 rims are made of high-end UD fibers and impress with their first-class mechanical properties and low weight. They are the ideal basis for a stable all-mountain wheelset.
The hookless construction predestines them for tubeless use. The significantly reinforced rim flange withstands possible punctures better and allows driving with little air pressure. In order to avoid weak points, the spoke holes were drilled using a special method.
Due to the flanks that are slightly outwards, the shape of the tire is rounder, which means that a much better cornering grip and increased safety are achieved.
