A robust Gravel wheelset with textile spokes, can that work? So far, there have been many approaches from well-known manufacturers, but all of them have produced unsatisfactory results. The young and extremely innovative think tank PI ROPE from Chemnitz, Saxony, has made the impossible possible in cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz. The result is a textile spoke made of braided Vectran synthetic fibers.
The material is extremely robust, resistant to aging and weathering, and has better mechanical properties than its steel counterpart. The tensile strength and damping is many times higher, but the weight of the fibers is five times lower. These are optimal prerequisites for a very light, but nevertheless hard-wearing wheel, as the rotating masses are minimized in the important outer areas and the flexibility of the Vectran textile spokes prevents permanent plastic deformation at high peak loads.
The GR40 rims from Beast Components are the ideal basis for this extraordinary wheelset. The small manufactory from Dresden has dedicated itself entirely to the material carbon and manufactures with it at the highest level. This guarantees stability and durability.
The rims installed here combine the positive properties of the RR40 and the XC25. This means that aerodynamics and impact resistance meet. This is exactly what makes good gravel equipment. If you're going fast on asphalt, they offer the wind hardly any surface to attack, if you're speeding down gravel roads, they also forgive an impact.
The first is due to the high profile and its special, curved shape. The hookless and extra reinforced rim flange ensures robustness. This also puts away harder punctures and thus prevents damage to this exposed area. In addition, the air pressure can be lowered, which significantly increases comfort and grip. In addition, the enormous inner width gives the tire perfect support, which prevents it from buckling in fast corners and creates more driving stability.
The high-quality workmanship and the well thought-out choice of materials forgive you for a driving mistake and let the rims look like new even after many kilometers.
In cooperation with the well-known impeller and component manufacturer NEWMEN, hubs were specially developed that can accommodate the special ends of the PI ROPE spokes. In the current FADE hubs with pawl freewheel, as in the predecessor, long-lasting bearings are pressed in stress-free and precisely, so that the often tedious adjustment of the axial bearing play is completely eliminated. Thanks to the slim shape in the middle part, the hub saves weight and is also more aerodynamic.
