The heart of this classic J-Bend (spoke flange for classic spoke heads) rear wheel hub is the freewheel system. NEWMEN only uses the more expensive and complex, but for years extremely successfully used pulley freewheels.
In contrast to ratchet freewheels, the two toothed lock washers of the freewheel system guarantee that all teeth are always fully engaged. With pawl freewheels, however, in the worst case, only one pawl can be engaged. This places extreme stress on the hubs and freewheel bearings. With a heavy load (e.g. up a steep hill) a total failure is usually the result.
As with the J-Bend front hub, the hub flanges in the area of the spoke holes in the HR hub are reinforced for a longer lifespan of the hub. Only high-quality, double-sealed industrial bearings with a special grease filling are used on the rear wheel hubs. The grease used by NEWMEN offers 25% more water absorption and a very high bleeding temperature, which protects the bearings from premature wear and corrosion. The 17 mm oversize rear wheel axle is butted on the inside for weight reasons and ensures the best stiffness values.
