The new Hope Pro 5 rear wheel hub from the English cult manufacturer is the consistent further development of the popular classic, the Hope Pro 4. It is well known that the British do not have the best sunny weather, so the new hubs were put through their paces under the most adverse conditions. If a component has reached its wear limit, the Pro 5 can be completely disassembled and repaired using normal tools. In typical Hope design, the hubs are milled from a solid block of 2014 T6 aluminum and anodized in the usual colors.
6-pawl freewheel system in offset design
The 6-pawl freewheel system in offset design is characterized by the fact that three of the six pawls are always engaged when driving in order to center the freewheel in the pawl and thus distribute the load evenly. In addition, the freewheel teeth were increased from 44 teeth (Pro 4) to 54 teeth, which results in a total of 108 locking points. In addition, material has been removed from the center of the springs of the pawls, which reduces the spring force and thus reduces air resistance. With the Pro 5, Hope creates the right balance between acceleration behavior and durability. An e-bike-specific hub version is also available, which is equipped with a freewheel system that is designed for the increased requirements and forces that occur on modern e-bikes by having all 6 pawls engage at the same time.
Labyrinth seal
One of the key goals of Hope's designers was to reduce friction in the drive mechanism. They achieved this with the help of the new, resistance-free labyrinth seal on the drive side. This is a non-contact shaft seal. Additionally, friction in the drive mechanism could be reduced through the use of the improved pawl system and springs. By reducing the friction in the drive system, the load capacity and thus the durability of the rear wheel hub was also improved. The non-drive side bearings have an external seal.
